Hiking in Wellerlooi, Limburg, The Netherlands

Hiking in Limburg is a true treat for nature lovers. The quiet village of Wellerlooi, located in the northern part of Limburg on the banks of the Meuse River, is the perfect starting point. Bordering De Maasduinen National Park, it offers an ideal setting for a peaceful and scenic nature walk in the Netherlands.

Wellerlooi and Maasduinen National Park

De Maasduinen National Park is unique because of its long, narrow river dunes, a rare landscape in the Netherlands. Formed during the last Ice Age by water, wind, and human intervention, this area features forests, heathlands, fens, and rolling sand dunes. It’s a true paradise for hikers seeking variety and tranquility.

Easy Route Planning with the Node Network

One of the biggest advantages of hiking in this region is the Dutch node (knooppunt) network. Just follow the numbered signs to create your own hiking route. It’s simple, flexible, and perfect for both beginner and experienced hikers.

Starting Point: Jachthut Op den Hamer

I started my Wellerlooi hike at Jachthut Op den Hamer, Twistedenerweg 2. There’s a clearly marked parking lot (P1) where you can leave your car.
The trail quickly leads you into the forest. After a brief road crossing, you pass through a wooden gate – and suddenly, you’re standing at the edge of the Meuse.

Walking Along the Meuse River

The Meuse River (Maas in Dutch) is the lifeline of Limburg. While it forms the border with Belgium further south, here it meanders peacefully through the landscape. Around 2020, large parts of this area were given back to nature, allowing the river to flow more freely.

On the day of my walk, the trail along the river was accessible. I enjoyed the calm water, spotted passing ships, and listened to the lively chatter of waterbirds. Camera in hand, thoughts at ease.

We have this pin in many European countries. such as Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Croatia.

Back Into the National Park

Heading towards node 55, you cross the N271 again and re-enter Maasduinen National Park. Autumn had already painted the forest in shades of gold, orange, and rust. The sunlight filtered through the trees, giving everything a magical glow.

The path continued through forest trails and sandy patches, past heathlands that had just finished blooming. In late August and September, the area turns into a sea of purple – a must-see during bloom season.

Scenic Views from De Dikkenberg

The trail took me over slight elevation changes and eventually to De Dikkenberg. Not a real mountain, but from the bench at the top, I had a stunning view over Westmeerven and Heerenven – two peaceful fens surrounded by forest.

A perfect spot to pause, breathe, and simply be.

Galloways and Wildlife Encounters

Along the way, I encountered Galloway cattle and sheep freely grazing in the area. It added a natural and surprising element to the hike.

Later, the trail leads over two long, straight paths. While they may look uneventful at first, they offer lovely views. Near one of the fens, a gate gives access to a birdwatching hut – a quiet place to observe wildlife and take a moment of stillness.

WWII History Along the Route

Just before the end of the hike, you walk along the Geldernsch-Nierskanaal, a narrow canal winding calmly through the countryside. Here, you’ll spot metal poles leaning from the ground: a “Asparagus barrier” – an anti-tank defense from WWII.

These obstacles, meant to stop tanks, were once widespread. Most have since disappeared, but here in Wellerlooi, they remain as silent reminders of the past.

Funny enough, they do resemble asparagus if you look closely – a quirky and very Limburg-like name!

I also came across this obstruction on my walking route from Amsterdam to Camp Westerbork, when I was hiking the Westerborkpad.

Back at the Car – Full of Impressions

After roughly 12 kilometers, I returned to my car with a clear mind, a full heart, and a memory card full of nature photos.

Hiking nodes I followed: 45 – 47 – 48 – 55 – 54 – 51 – 52 – 53 – 58 – 46 – 45

Extra Tip: Visit Arcen and the Castle Gardens

If you’re near Wellerlooi, don’t miss the charming village of Arcen. It’s known for its welcoming atmosphere and the stunning Castle Gardens of Arcen (Kasteeltuinen Arcen (Dutch website)).

Behind the gates of the historic castle lie gardens of every shape and color – from serene Japanese ponds and rose gardens to an Italian terrace garden and a mysterious bamboo forest. Every season has something unique to offer.

Kids can explore the maze or go on an adventure trail, while you relax with a coffee on a picturesque terrace. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a proud peacock strolling across the lawn.
