Hiking from Station to Station
The Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) is the Dutch national railway system. Trains in the Netherlands are fast, frequent, reliable, and connect almost every city, region, and even small towns. Often, you can transfer to a local bus upon arrival.
Please note: public transport is not free, and tickets must usually be purchased in advance.
NS Hiking Trails: Discover the Netherlands on Foot
In this blog, I’ll explain how NS hikes work and why they’re such a great way to explore the Netherlands.
These hikes are popular walking routes that start and end at a train station. They’re created through a collaboration between NS and regional partners.
The idea is simple: take the train to the starting point, walk a scenic route, and catch the train back to your home or holiday accommodation.
It’s a relaxed way to experience culture, history, and nature whether you’re walking through a city or a peaceful nature reserve.
What Are NS Hikes?
NS hikes are specially designed station-to-station walking routes. No car needed, making them both accessible and eco-friendly.
The routes take you through forests, heathlands, sand dunes, along rivers, charming villages, and interesting towns.
Distances and landscapes vary, so there’s a suitable route for every kind of walker.
Types of NS Hikes
Short hikes (5–10 km)
Perfect for families or those looking for a quick outing. These walks often lead through parks, town centers, or small nature areas.
Medium hikes (10–20 km)
For those who want more of a challenge. These walks typically start in a town or village and head into the countryside or nearby nature areas. Sometimes you can combine the walk with a visit to a museum or café.
Long hikes (20+ km)
For experienced hikers. Ideal if you enjoy spending a whole day outdoors. Think of routes through the dunes, along the coast, or across vast nature reserves like the Veluwe or Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
Why Choose an NS Hike?
Easy to Reach
Every route starts and ends at a train station, convenient no matter where you’re coming from.
Eco-Friendly Travel
Travelling by train is environmentally friendly and a great way to enjoy nature without needing a car.
Plenty of Variety
There’s a route for every level and interest. Whether you love city vibes, peaceful nature, or a mix of both. There’s always an NS hike that suits you.
Peace and Open Space
The Netherlands is full of hidden gems. NS hikes lead you through quiet nature areas, babbling brooks, wide open fields, and lush forest trails.
Clear Waymarking
Most routes are well-marked, often using red-and-white signs (long-distance trail markings), so you can walk worry-free without getting lost.
Buying Train Tickets
- OV-chipkaart (Public Transport Card)
Available online or at stations. Ideal for frequent travelers in the Netherlands. - Single-use tickets
Can be purchased via the NS app, ticket machines at stations, or the NS website. - Contactless check-in/out
You can check in and pay with your bank card or credit card at nearly every station. Note: international cards don’t always work flawlessly, so buying a ticket remains the safest option.
Tips for Your NS Hike
Follow the Signs
Most NS hikes follow red-white trail markings (LAW). Sometimes you’ll also see signs that say “NS-wandeling.” Stay alert at crossings.
Navigation on Hand
Route descriptions are available on the NS website. I personally use Komoot and save the GPS track offline — a great backup in case you doubt the way.
Bring Snacks and Drinks
Not every route has cafés along the way. Bring enough water and some snacks — especially on longer walks. A thermos with tea or coffee is always a good idea too!
Go for It!
NS hikes are a low-threshold, sustainable, and enjoyable way to explore the Netherlands. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned hiker, the network has something for everyone.
So lace up your hiking boots, hop on a train, and discover the most beautiful places the Netherlands has to offer — one step at a time.
I walked one of these NS routes myself and wrote a blog about it.
