De De Polen van Driel<\/strong> walking route explores the story of the Polish troops who fought near Driel during Operation Market Garden in September 1944. In this village in Gelderland, in the Netherlands, a peaceful landscape holds memories of a very different time.<\/p>

This is another short walk, but it is exactly the kind of route I enjoy. Along the way, I take my time to look around, read information and discover what makes a place special. For me, walking is about the experience rather than the distance. And on this route, nature and history come together.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Setting off from Polenplein<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I park my car at Polenplein, or Polish Square. I only notice the name later, but it could hardly be more appropriate. I follow the route on Komoot, occasionally checking the accompanying website for more background information.<\/p>

Early in my walk, I come across a bust of Major General Stanis\u0142aw Sosabowski<\/strong>. His name is already familiar to me from a temporary exhibition I visited at the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek. Still, I soon realise there is much more to discover about him here. The pedestal also carries information, including a reference to the Bronze Lion decoration he received posthumously.<\/p>

Outside the village, the landscape draws my attention. The skies are beautiful, and yesterday\u2019s rain seems to have made the colours of the countryside shine a little brighter. In the distance, I can see a bridge. The fruit trees around me are a reminder that I am walking through the Betuwe, a region known for its orchards.<\/p>

On this stretch of the route, the history is not always immediately visible. As I look around, I try to imagine what this landscape must have looked like in September 1944. How different must it have been?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Remembering the retreat across the Rhine<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

About halfway through the walk, I reach a memorial commemorating the retreat across the Rhine on the night of 25\u201326 September 1944<\/strong>. Earlier, Polish soldiers had tried to cross the river from the Driel area to reach the British troops surrounded in Oosterbeek. With the Driel ferry out of action, they had to rely on boats.<\/p>

Eventually, the Allied troops had to withdraw from Oosterbeek to the southern bank of the Rhine. This evacuation was known as Operation Berlin. The White Ribbon Mile, which I have written about before, commemorates their journey down to the river.<\/p>

On my GPS, I notice that the route includes a short out-and-back section to the water. I expect to find a memorial or an information panel there. Once I reach the river, I look around, searching. Why can\u2019t I see anything?<\/p>

Then I realise that I am standing near the place where the ferry should have been. Perhaps I simply need to pause here. Look at the water. Look towards the opposite bank. And try to imagine what it must have felt like to arrive here and discover that you could go no further.<\/p>

The ferryman had disabled the ferry on 20 September 1944 to prevent German troops from using it. As a result, the Polish soldiers were unable to use it either.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Along the dike: a weir and a vintage car<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Back on the dike, something unrelated to the wartime history catches my eye: the Driel weir complex. Its large, curved gates are visible from a distance. My route does not take me past it, and I decide against making a detour. Today, I am happy to admire it from the dike.<\/p>

A little later, a vintage car comes towards me. Beautifully polished, it chugs gently along the road. It almost feels as though it belongs in the story of this walk.<\/p>

Back home, while looking through my photos, I notice the number plate and decide to look it up. The car turns out to date from 1948, just after the Second World War. Still, it feels rather special to have seen it here.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Coffee and an unexpected conversation in Driel<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Before long, I am back in the village. I look around, as I have read that there is an information centre about the Polish troops in Driel<\/strong>.<\/p>

While I am trying to work out where to go, someone calls out, \u201cHello.\u201d The voice comes from a place that looks like a caf\u00e9. Thinking I have found the information centre, I step inside.<\/p>

It turns out to be a community meeting space, and the gentleman who greets me seems happy to have someone to chat with. I order a coffee, and we get talking. About the Polish troops in Driel, but also about this place, which has only been open for a week, the volunteers and the library housed here.<\/p>

For me, that is part of walking too: stepping inside somewhere and unexpectedly finding yourself in a conversation.<\/p>

When I finish my coffee, he points me towards the information centre in the neighbouring church. First, though, he suggests that I take a look at the information panels outside.<\/p>

Before I leave, he emphasises once more that Driel owes its liberation to the Polish soldiers. It is clear that their contribution still means a great deal here.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

General Sosabowski and the recognition that came later<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

At the information panels, I read more about Sosabowski. Today, he is honoured for his courage and commitment, but at the time he received very different treatment. After the failure of Operation Market Garden, the British military leadership made him a scapegoat. In December 1944, he was removed from his position as brigade commander.<\/p>

After the war, he lived in England, where he worked, among other jobs, as a warehouse worker. He died in 1967. Official recognition from the Netherlands came many years later.<\/p>

On 31 May 2006, Queen Beatrix presented his two grandsons with the Bronze Lion<\/strong>, awarded to him posthumously. The family subsequently placed the decoration on permanent loan to the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek.<\/p>

I knew very little about the Bronze Lion before this walk. Now I know that it is a Dutch decoration for bravery. Behind it lies a story that reaches far beyond the few lines I read on a pedestal at the start of my route.<\/p>

That is what makes this walk special to me. I explore a beautiful landscape, pause to reflect on a significant chapter of history and find myself in an unexpected conversation along the way. A short walk, perhaps, but one that has shown me a great deal.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
